Comparing Mickey's first stint in the band to his second really is apples and oranges. By 1976 (when the two drummer configuration went back on the road full time), the Dead were a significantly different outfit than they had been during the late 60s. Billy K really seemed to grow as a drummer during that time (I'm not a drummer; it's just a general impression I have). Mickey's return just seemed to have a drag effect on some of the music.

I was not making a comparison between the eras, but simply stating that his drumming sucked in both of his stints with the band. While his 67'/71' run might be less criticized due to the nature of the music, his drumming was still heavy handed, plodding and unnecessary. It's obvious the post hiatus band wasn't even remotely as good in execution or creativity in comparison to their prior incarnations,as to what degree Mickey is responsible for this decline I won't venture a guess, but his drumming was bad to the point of distraction and they would have unquestionably sounded better without him.

If you'll look at the thread, you'll see I wasn't replying to your post. I was replying to the original post.
